Malaysian authorities on Wednesday issued a tsunami alert and urged evacuations along its west coast following a massive earthquake in the Indian Ocean.
"We have declared a tsunami alert along the west coast of the peninsula (Malaysia). We have ordered immediate evacuation of residents along the coastal states of Perlis, Kedah, Langkawi, Penang and Perak," a Malaysian Meteorological Department official told AFP.
Two hours after the quake hit, however, there was no sign of the feared wave. Damage also appeared to be minimal.
