If you want to know the best way to fall in love with Paris, the best advice I can give you is don’t be a tourist. At least not in the traditional sense of the word. Though this city is synonymous with romance, there is hardly anything intimate or special about standing in a crowd of other tourists elbowing each other out for the best selfie-stick photo in front of Notre Dame. To truly experience and fall in love with Paris, you need to immerse yourself in the culture of the city and its people.
Paris is a center for artistry in its many forms. Parisians have an unadulterated appreciation for classical art, fresh cooking and the inspiration of music. True, watching the Eiffel Tower glittering among the night’s stars from the Champ de Mars is an unforgettable moment, but so is the reverberation of violins among the chapel walls of Sainte Chapelle, as the evening sunlight filters through the stained-glass windows in a kaleidoscope of colors. That is the magic of Paris.
So many people return from their exploits telling the same stories of the same places. Visit Paris for yourself to seek out and fall in love with little pieces of the city that will feel like your own. Having been to Paris three times myself, here are a few of my favorites.
Hemingway captured it best when he described this “wonderful narrow crowded market street.” It is both quiet and alive with the aromas of warm bread, fresh fish, roasting chickens and the vibrance of ruby strawberries and sunset peaches. This historical street market — one of the oldest in Paris — is at its most colorful when walked on a sunny spring day. The vendors (in my experience) only speak French, yet instead of feeling like an outsider, you find yourself just as welcomed as the locals. This charismatic little street will have you forgetting that old stereotype about the inhospitable French.
Atelier des Lumieres
Located in a converted iron foundry, this gallery brings some of history’s most loved artists’ paintings to life. Atelier de Lumieres projects series of moving paintings (think rippling water and swirling moonlight, even the art painting itself) onto soaring warehouse walls and pairs them with sounds that evoke even deeper feeling; during a recent exhibition, visitors could surround themselves with some of Van Gogh’s most famous works set to the music of everything from a piano lullaby to Janis Joplin’s moody Kozmic Blues. The result feels larger than life. You are truly experiencing art.
Concert at Sainte Chapelle
There is something enchanting about listening to beautiful music in beautiful places. Euromusic Productions’ musicians share time-honored classical pieces of Mozart, Bach, Handel and more in some of the most breathtaking settings in Paris, including Sainte Chapelle, Saint Germain, Saint Sulpice and the Gustave Eiffel Room on the first level of the Eiffel Tower. These concerts are once-in-a-lifetime experiences whose magic would be hard to recreate in any place other than the city of romance.
My advice sums up to one thing: Don’t limit yourself in experiencing one of the greatest cities in the world. Allow yourself to fall in love with all of Paris, not just the parts you can see photographed on a postcard. Become a part of Paris. Make her your own, and she will forever hold a place in your heart.
