Your journey begins in Chicago O’Hare, where you will board your overnight flight to Brussels, Belgium.
On arrival, you have one group transfer to your hotel. After checking in, the afternoon is yours to relax. At 5:00 PM join your Travel Director for an orientation. See the Atomium, designed for the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair. Visit to the cheeky Manneken Pis statue and leisurely stroll around the Grand Place, voted the most beautiful square in Europe. Your delightful first evening also includes a Welcome Dinner with wine at a local restaurant in the heart of the Old Town with an opportunity to mingle with your fellow travelers.

Cross the border into Germany and continue to Aachen, site of one of the largest urban battles fought by U.S. forces in World War II, and the first city on German soil to be captured by the Allies. Enjoy the old town and visit the fantastic Cathedral, so steeped in the history of the Franks. Drive through the beautiful countryside of the Eifel National Park, which belies the three months of misery endured by all who fought there. Continue to Düren, which was completely destroyed by Allied air bombings.

Continue to Remagen. Despite attempts by Nazis to destroy it, the Ludendorff Bridge on the Rhine was captured on March 7, 1945 intact by US 9th Armored Division and over 7,000 troops poured over to the Eastern shore. Visit the Peace Museum and Bridge and learn why the capture of the bridge was an important milestone for American forces (subject to availability). Later, visit Buchenwald and the site of the former concentration camp, then continue to Weimar to see the theater where the Weimar Constitution was drafted.

In Dresden, join your Local Expert to see the splendors of the city. From the Frauenkirche, which has risen again from the destruction of World War II, walk past ‘The Procession of the Princes’, a mosaic of colossal proportions on the Royal Palace facade. See the huge cathedral, Semper Opera House, and Baroque Zwinger Palace. Although the town was heavily bombed during World War II, it remains a treasure trove of early German history and baroque architecture. Continue to Berlin, whose once turbulent history has shaped its rebirth as a charismatic capital city.

Join a Local Expert to see some of Berlin’s many highlights. Travel along the Ku’Damm past the Memorial Church. Drive through the Tiergarten to see Norman Foster’s glass dome that crowns the reconstructed Reichstag building. Continue with a visit to the Brandenburg Gate, a symbol of the reunification, and down along the Unter den Linden, past the Humboldt University and State Opera. Stop on Museum Island before enjoying the rest of the day at leisure. Perhaps take the opportunity to visit the glorious palace of the Prussian Kings at Potsdam?

Explore the shadows of the past with our Local Expert and visit the staggering Holocaust Memorial. Stop for a photo at ‘Checkpoint Charlie’, location of the tense stand-offs between U.S. & Soviet forces during the Cold War. Then a real highlight as we visit the Berlin Wall Memorial. The memorial contains the last section of the Berlin Wall with a guard tower and preserved grounds, thus able to convey an impression of how the border fortifications developed until the end of the 1980s. Learn about this focal point of 20th-century history and of the fate of those who attempted to cross it. Later, visit the Topography of Terror Museum, an interesting history museum housed in the former Gestapo and SS headquarters between 1933 and 1945. Continue to see the Soviet Memorial Treptow which commemorates the 80,000 Soviet soldiers who died in the Second World War fighting to capture Berlin. Finally, visit the Museum Berlin- Karlshorst, the place where, on May 9th 1945, high ranking officials of the Third Reich signed their unconditional surrender.

Discover Leipzig this morning. In WWII, the city was also the target of Allied bombing, but it was spared the fate of its rival neighbor, Dresden, of near total destruction. Continue to the medieval town of Nuremberg.

Nuremberg is renowned for its medieval architecture. Admire the charming blend of stone and timbered dwellings in the Old Town. See the massive ramparts, most of which are still standing, and perhaps shop for delicious Lebkuchen? See the St. Sebald Church, reconstructed as a peace monument from near-total wartime destruction. Bring yourself good luck spinning the two brass rings at the Schöner Brunnen, a 14th century fountain dedicated to the Holy Roman Empire. Availability permitting, visit the Memoriam Nuremberg Trials and Courtroom 600, followed by visits to the impressive Documentation Center and Nazi Rally Grounds.

Saturday, August 10 – Branau am Inn to Salzburg
Cross the border to Braunau am Inn, Austria, known for being the birthplace of Adolf Hitler. Arriving in Salzburg, the city of Mozart and the ‘Sound of Music,’ a Local Expert shows you the formal gardens of Mirabell Palace, which includes the fountains and statues where the ‘Do, Re, Mi’ scene was filmed. Later, see Residence Square and its fountain, where Maria sings ‘I Have Confidence’. See the imposing fortress, immense cathedral, and Mozart’s birthplace on the lively Getreidegasse.

Drive over the German border, past picturesque farmhouses, and villages to Obersalzberg. Nearly 75 years ago, this small mountain paradise was the summer playground for top Nazi brass. Here we will transfer to special coaches for the scenic drive up the mountain to Hitler’s notorious “Eagle’s Nest”. Used as a restaurant since the 50’s, there are splendid views through the arches up to the ‘Hohen Goll’ and across the snowcapped peaks. Continue to Munich, where Adolf Hitler went at the end of WW I and the birthplace of the Nazis. This evening you will revel in a true Bavarian experience as you dine at a local beerhall.

Monday, August 12 – Explore Munich and Dachau
Explore Munich on a city orientation of the university, Victory Arch and the Marienplatz, where crowds gather at the Town Hall to watch the antics of the Glockenspiel. Join a Local Expert on a walking tour in Hitler’s footsteps and learn about his rise and fall. Travel to the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site for a moment of commemoration and remembrance. Reflect on the weighty history that marks the site and observe the importance of its preservation.
