A message from Rose:

Join me in South Africa –

In March 2015 I had the privilege to travel to South Africa with African Travel, Inc.  It was one of the most incredible trips of my life; an adventure I will never forget and one that I was anxious to share with my Fox World Travel friends and WTMJ listeners. But sharing through blogs and photos wasn’t enough.  I wanted to make this extraordinary journey available to anyone who has dreamed of exploring South Africa.

I am excited that Select Group Vacations has been able to create an outstanding itinerary which includes the beautiful winelands, big game viewing at a private game reserve, the cosmopolitan areas of Cape Town and Johannesburg and Victoria Falls which is one of the seven natural Wonders of the World.  I hope that you will consider joining me as we discover together the vibrant cultures and stunning scenery of South Africa.

With our air-inclusive package, you'll depart from Milwaukee and board your overnight to Johannesburg. Or meet us in Johannesburg on your own flights.

On arrival in Johannesburg, you are met by a “VIP” representative, who will assist you with customs formalities, help you collect your luggage and through to the arrivals hall.

As you enter the arrivals hall, look for a representative from Thompsons Africa, holding a sign with your name on it. Should you need any additional services such as exchanging currency or cell phone rental, our representative will be able to assist. You will be handed your tour documents and assisted to your ongoing flight to Cape Town.

Upon arrival in Cape Town, you will be met and escorted to your awaiting vehicle for transfer to your reserved hotel.

With its majestic Table Mountain backdrop, Cape Town is one of the most vibrant and beautiful cities in the world. The city is an eclectic mix of architectural styles, reflecting both the tastes of the past and more modern designs. Edwardian and Victorian buildings have been meticulously preserved, and many outstanding examples of Cape Dutch architecture are found in the city and its environs. Cobblestone streets, mosques and the flat-roofed pastel homes of the Malay Quarter enhance the cosmopolitan ambience, while the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront evokes images of the seafaring activities of the 19th century.

Hotel: The Vineyard Hotel & Spa

This morning meet your Thompsons Africa Tour Director for a review of your itinerary. Your package contains important up-to-date documentation which includes pick-up times, internal flight details, hotel booking reference numbers and in-country telephone numbers. Please refer to this document, throughout your vacation for the most current information. Following your briefing depart on today’s excursion.

See for yourself how this spectacular southern tip of the Peninsula became known as the ‘Fairest Cape’. Your private tour begins with a drive past the pristine beaches of Camps Bay and Clifton. Wind your way along the coast, past Bakoven and Llandudno, with their ghostly shipwrecks, towards the charming fishing village of Hout Bay, a functioning harbor and heart of the local crayfish industry.

Weather permitting; we board a boat to Duiker Island to view the Cape Fur Seal colony. From here we hug the cliffs as we snake along the legendary Chapman’s Peak Drive to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, home to fabulous birds and very special fauna, such as Cape mountain zebra, bontebok and the charismatic Cape baboon.

The spectacular sea and mountain views are reason enough to make the 41 mile trip from Cape Town.

Climb (or ride the world’s first environmentally friendly funicular) to the famous Cape Point Lighthouse to capture the magical vistas of False Bay. After lunch (your own account), continue along the coastline to the beautiful Boulders Beach where you can view a colony of penguins. Then head home through the naval village of Simon’s Town and over scenic Boyes Drive, taking in the views of the fishing harbor at Kalk Bay and the seaside havens of St. James and Muizenberg. To round off your day you can take a stroll through Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens on the slopes of Table Mountain. During the Cape’s winter months, Kirstenbosch will be replaced with a visit to Groot Constantia, South Africa’s oldest wine estate.

Meal: Breakfast

This morning meet your tour director in the lobby and begin a full day private excursion to the Cape Winelands.

Enjoy a superb day dedicated to celebrating the glorious grape. Learn all about the process of winemaking, from grape to goblet. Revel in the scenery…like the breath taking views of the Paarl valley and the picturesque little village of Franschhoek, first settled by the Huguenots. Take a stroll through historical, glorious Stellenbosch with its Cape Dutch architecture, absorbing the quaintness of this lovely university town. A trip to the winelands isn’t complete without a wine tasting, so a cellar tour and two tastings have been organized at different wine estates. Of course, you’ll be able to purchase your favorite wine to take back home! Lunch on your own account will be enjoyed at a leading wine estate.

This evening, as special guests in a private home, enjoy the hospitality and delicious cuisine that is synonymous with South Africa. Your hosts, Liz and Eugene Bester, were both born and bred in South Africa. Liz has recently retired from the hotel industry and Eugene is a lawyer. Liz is involved in many activities including being on the board of a program called "Hoops for Hope" – an outreach program that teaches life skills to previously disadvantaged children.
Liz and Eugene often invite friends over to share the evening. They are warm and engaging hosts who always enjoy lively conversation and good humor. The Bester family has two friendly dogs, one of which will put on a show for guests!

Visitors often return from safari proclaiming that the home hosted dinner was one of the highlights of their South African vacation! The evening is meant to be fun and informal so there is no need to ‘dress up’ for the occasion.

Depart this morning to the Hermanus New Harbor to begin your full day whale watching excursion by boat. On arrival you will have a short briefing before boarding the boat. On board there will be a registered skipper and a whale guide specialist. The boat will travel out to where the whales have been spotted before stopping. From there the decision is left entirely to the whales whether or not they wish to approach the boat - being curious creatures, they often do come right up to the vessel. It is definitely an experience to be treasured.

Some of the species you may see are the Southern Right Whales, seals, penguins and a variety of marine birds. If you are fortunate you might also encounter dolphins, Bryde's (the resident whale throughout the year - not very friendly, unfortunately rather shy), and Humpback whales.

For your comfort, you should bring the following; hat, sun block, cameras, binoculars, and jacket. Seasick tablets should be taken in advance, if needed, as per instructions on package. Light refreshments are served aboard during the trip. Alcohol and smoking are not permitted.
