Ultimate Alaska and the Yukon 2021

June 7, 2021 to June 20, 2021

If you live by the motto, “Go big or go home,” it doesn’t get any bigger than this grand tour of Alaska and the Yukon Territory. Where else can you see bears the size of buffalo, glaciers the size of states, and national parks the size of nations? In this great expanse of pure wilderness, the majestic mountains, never-ending landscapes, and supersize wildlife of the 49th state are waiting to transport you to another state of mind. Big sights are accented by even bigger experiences as you board the Alaska Railroad to the tallest peak in North America, the sternwheeler Discovery for a Fairbanks river cruise, and a small ship to witness the dominating glaciers and playful whales of Prince William Sound. Follow the tracks of caribou and moose in the 6-million-acre Denali National Park, trace the trail of gold seekers during the Klondike Gold Rush, and follow the paw steps of Alaska’s famous dogsledding huskies.

We have prepared everything you need for the perfect vacation, from hand-selected hotels to expert Local Guides, and included VIP sightseeing access to the world’s iconic sites. Your Tour Director is always there to help you make the most out of your free time!

A beautiful drive this morning takes us to Wasilla and the Iditarod Headquarters. Immerse yourself in the rich history and culture of “The Last Great Race.” The race travels part of the Iditarod National Historic Trail, which was once used to transport mail and supplies throughout Alaska. James Redington Sr, the “Father of the Iditarod” helped to cement this trail as part of history and created the famous Iditarod sled dog race. We’ll continue on to Talkeetna, starting point for Denali climbers, where we will board the Alaska Railroad trip to Denali National Park. Enjoy wonderful views from your seat in the domed rail car as your car manager shares the history of the route. Tonight take part in a Globus Local Favorite Dinner at Murie Science & Learning Center, which includes a presentation by a local Naturalist.

Watch for moose, caribou, grizzly bear, Dall sheep and lots of smaller critters like fox and arctic ground squirrels. After a wonderful day in the park you’ll have some free time for afternoon and evening options, like river rafting, flight seeing, wagon rides, ATV’s and more. Your Tour Director will be happy to offer tips and assist with booking your optional activities.

After an orientation drive through this unique town, you have free time this evening to explore.

The highlight will be a stop at the Athabascan Village, where you will learn their way of life. Later we’ll visit the Museum of the North at the University of Alaska–Fairbanks. Discover Alaska Native cultures, natural wonders, diverse wildlife and Arctic dinosaurs. Explore 2,000 years of Alaska art, along with original exhibits and breathtaking architecture. No visit to Fairbanks is complete without a stop at the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. Running 800 miles from Prudhoe Bay on the Artic Ocean to Valdez, Alaska, you’ll be amazed at one of the world’s largest pipeline systems. After our busy day, you’ll enjoy free time this evening.

This is going to be a spectacular day! We depart Fairbanks and start on the journey to Canada’s Yukon Territory. One of the most vast and beautiful drives is on the Top of the World Highway. The little (tiny) town of Chicken will be one of our break stops and we encourage you to try the bakery or have a beer in the pub, because that’s all you’ll find there! Buy a souvenir from the Chicken Gift Shop. It will be unique! The epic scenery continues all the way to Dawson City. The highway ferry will take us for a short sail across the Yukon River. Watch the captain navigate the strong currents. As we exit the ferry downtown, it will feel like we’ve entered a time machine back to the Gold Rush Days! Dirt streets, clapboard sidewalks, false-fronted buildings and colorful characters will welcome you. Tonight, let’s meet at Diamond Tooth Gertie’s Gambling Hall and Can-Can Revue! Revenue from the casino are used to preserve the town’s historic sites, so it’s OK to leave a little donation. Find a good seat for Gertie’s show tonight and enjoy a little comedy, good music and lots of dancing girls.

Hotel: Eldorado Hotel (or similar)

Meals: Breakfast

Visit Klondike Gold Rush Claim #1 this morning to learn the processes and hardships of staking and mining a claim. Next is a stop at the Robert Service Interpretive Center. Arriving in the Yukon from Britain as a bank clerk in 1905, he turned the vivid tales told to him by veterans of the great gold rush into such classic poems as “The Shooting of Dan McGrew" and "The Cremation of Sam McGee." Robert Service was one of the most successful poets of the 20th century and often referred to as the “Bard of the Yukon.” Now is your chance to wonder this great little city with a free afternoon and evening. Walk along the Yukon River Trail. Cross the river by ferry and hike to the Sternwheeler Graveyard, a historical park. Stop at Parks Canada and sign up for one of many neat walking tours. There’s lots of shops and wonderful restaurants too!

Hotel: Eldorado Hotel (or similar)

Meals: Breakfast

Today will be a long day, but full of fun and more amazing views. We’ll see Tintina Trench and Five Finger Rapids en route to Whitehorse, both with spectacular vistas. There will be unique stops along the way, like Moose Creek where a lovely Swiss lady is selling delicious sausage rolls, Bavarian pretzels and fresh fruit tarts. Whitehorse is the capital of the Yukon Territory, but with 30,000 residents, it’s got a small town feel. This is as cosmopolitan as you’ll get in the Yukon, with fancy shops and fabulous restaurants. Enjoy your free evening here along the Yukon River.

Hotel: Best Western Gold Rush Inn (or similar)

Meals: Breakfast

A full day is ahead as our guided tour includes the Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre. See the SS Klondike Riverboat, one of the first vessels to carry passengers and goods up the Yukon River. You’ll visit with Iditarod and Yukon Quest trainers and huskies at the Globus Local Favorite Muktuk Adventures dogsled facility. Like the Iditarod, some say the Yukon Quest, a race between Whitehorse and Fairbanks is much tougher. A Taste of the Yukon dinner is included tonight.

Hotel: Best Western Gold Rush Inn (or similar)

Today we return to Alaska. From Whitehorse it’s another lovely day of vast scenery as we drive past Kluane National Park, home to Canada’s highest peak, Mt Logan.
