Traveling to Alaska? Try these Dishes
Many visitors trek to Alaska for the monumental glaciers and leaping whales. But, food lovers rejoice because all throughout Alaska you can find some of the freshest seafood and meats that you can’t find anywhere else in the U.S. We asked our Alaska experts with over five decades of combined Alaska experience where they find themselves going back to. Here’s what they had to say:
Anchorage
A favorite Alaskan restaurant of many Fox Tour Managers is 49th State Brewing Company. With a huge menu, offering unique eats and local brews, this is a great place to relax and enjoy and meet locals.
Suggested Dishes: Tuna nachos for something unique & one of their beers
Looking for that early morning fuel to prepare you for your day of adventures? Fox Tour Manager Rose Gray suggests giving Snow City Café a try. Just make sure to make reservations if you want to get a table.
Suggested Dish: Stuffed French Toast or Alaskan King Crab Eggs Benedict
Juneau
One of our favorite places to stop and visit is the Red Dog Saloon, a swinging door saloon with sawdust floors that originated during the original Juneau mining era. The Red Dog Saloon is an experience to be had, with live entertainment provided by a gentleman who has been there forever. Entertainment is wild, and fun and maybe a bit naughty, but the Red Dog Saloon is always a full house.
Suggested Drink: Duck Fart – TRUST US!
Ketchikan
For a once and a lifetime experience hop on a floatplane and do the Mountaintop Flightseeing and Crab Feast at the world-famous George Inlet Lodge. The Dungeness Crab is fresh off the boat, steamed to perfection and served with melted butter, red potatoes and delicious Alaskan blueberry cheesecake. The George Inlet Lodge is a beautiful historic building that was once an old cannery bunkhouse and sits at the site of an old gold mine! It’s the perfect setting for a very intimate and romantic feast. If floatplanes aren’t your thing, you can do it by boat too! Take the Wilderness Explorer and Crab Feast.
Suggested Dish: Dungeness Crab
Seward
Fish lovers will love what Seward has to offer for seafood restaurants. In particular, fresh halibut is a great dish offered at multiple restaurants. Roy’s Waterfront is one that has Fox Tour Manager Colleen Alsberg going back over her twenty years of travels.
Suggested Dish: Crab-stuffed halibut
Denali National Park
Katie Buss, a Fox vacation travel consultants who spent three years living and working in Denali National Park says, “The best place to grab a pizza and beer is Prospectors Pizzeria & Alehouse.” There you will find more than 49 craft beers on tap and unique Alaskan Pizza, toppings include elk, reindeer, king crab and more.
Suggested Dish: Boreal Forest Pizza
