Uthando (Love) South Africa is an award-winning Fair Trade in Tourism certified non-profit organization that is creating a unique link between tourism and community development projects.

The Philanthropic Educational Excursions take place in the expansive townships or informal settlements like the Cape Flats in the eastern part of the city. Expert guides provide an in-depth overview of the history of South Africa and particularly the role that apartheid played in creating these communities. The guide will discuss the challenges confronting the locals concerning healthcare, education, social, political, and economic challenges. Visit three or four diverse community projects to learn about their work. Projects visited include urban agriculture; animal welfare; youth development through the medium of art, dance, choir singing, classical music, drumming or sport; special needs education; assistance to refugees; the environment; economic empowerment through skills development; arts and crafts; prisoner rehabilitation; care and protection for children, women, and the elderly.

In the afternoon, you can take an optional excursion to Robben Island. The ferry embarks from the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V&A Waterfront and heads to one of the most famous prison islands in the world. Robben Island, the unique symbol of “the triumph of the human spirit over adversity, suffering and injustice” with a rich 500-year-old multi-layered history, is visited every year by thousands of people eager to understand and honor the important aspects of South Africa’s history that the Island represents. This is where the legendary Nelson Mandela – father of the 21-century South Africa – spent 18 years. **You must purchase your tickets before departure.  Ask your Fox advisor for details. **

This evening, you will be picked up at your hotel to discover GOLD in Cape Town. Feel the heartbeat of this unique African restaurant, as you embark on a taste safari from Cape Town to Timbuktu. Your evening starts with an interactive Djembe drumming session which will get you in tune with the African rhythms and songs of the night. A soothing hand-washing ceremony completes your interactive drumming experience.

Dinner is a set course menu consisting of Cape Malay cuisine and African cuisine, served by beautifully adorned staff who will explain each dish to you and the country from which it originates. Be captivated by the drummers, singers and graceful Mali Puppets as they dance around your table. Their performances will embrace you and take you into the heart of Africa.

Learn all about the process of winemaking, from grape to goblet. Revel in the scenery…like the picturesque little village of Franschhoek, first settled by the Huguenots. Take a stroll through historical, charming Stellenbosch with its Cape Dutch architecture, absorbing the quaintness of this lovely university town. A trip to the winelands isn’t complete without a wine tasting, so a cellar tour and two tastings have been organized at different wine estates. Of course, you’ll be able to purchase your favorite wine to take back home! A lunch stop will be made at an enchanting wine estate (beverages on own account). After a wonderful day enjoying the sights and tastes of the winelands, you will be transferred to your hotel to enjoy the evening at leisure.

The seventh Natural Wonder of the World puts on the most dramatic show for you, and you’ll be privileged to have watched it. Lunch will be enjoyed at Dusty Road Township (beverages on own account). Late in the afternoon, experience the grandeur above the falls as you sail upstream on the Zambezi Reflections, a floating restaurant.
