OPTIONAL Pre or Post – Rwanda Gorilla Trekking

Step into the heart of Africa on this optional 3-night, 4-day Rwanda Gorilla Trekking extension, where misty volcanoes, lush forests, and powerful conservation stories create an experience found nowhere else on Earth. Begin in Kigali before journeying to Volcanoes National Park to explore the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund Campus and gain insight into decades of groundbreaking conservation. Venture into the rainforest for an unforgettable gorilla trek, coming face-to-face with endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Cultural encounters at the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village and a golden monkey trek through bamboo forests complete this extraordinary adventure—offering a once-in-a-lifetime connection to Rwanda’s wildlife, culture, and enduring spirit.

Activity Level 4 – Very Active

Best for energetic travelers who thrive on full days of exploration from morning into evening. Expect a fast-paced itinerary with longer walking distances—up to five miles or more—as well as steep inclines, uneven surfaces, and extended periods of standing, sometimes up to four hours. Travelers should be prepared to climb ten or more flights of stairs in a day, often without handrails, and navigate full touring days with early departures, late evenings, and significant travel times. Altitudes of 9,000 feet or higher may be reached, and travelers should be comfortable boarding different modes of transportation.

Mobility Guidance: You are welcome to inquire about participating, but mobility accommodations are extremely difficult at this level. Even with advance planning, travelers must be fully independent and able to complete all touring without the use of mobility aids.

Gorilla Trekking Specifics: Some gorilla families are more elusive, and tracking can take a full day, especially when it is wet and muddy. You must be physically fit, although no special mountaineering equipment or skills are required. Gorilla tracking takes place on trails that can be steep, muddy, and covered with thick vegetation. Stinging nettles and biting safari ants can be nuisances. Bring rain gear, wear long pants and gaiters. Layers of clothes will allow you to adjust to varying conditions. Wear muted colors—bright or white clothing should not be worn. Be sure to take a pair of light gloves to protect your hands from prickly plants and shrubs.

  • Guided city tour of Kigali, including a meaningful visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial.
  • Exclusive visit to the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, featuring the Research Center, Conservation Gallery, and immersive exhibits.
  • Once-in-a-lifetime mountain gorilla trekking experience in Volcanoes National Park, with expert local trackers and guides.
  • Cultural immersion at the Iby’Iwacu Gorilla Guardians Village, with traditional music, dance, and community storytelling.
  • Golden monkey trekking in the bamboo forests of Volcanoes National Park, observing these playful primates up close.
