U.S. Airlines Collected a Record $7B in Bag Fees in 2024
And yes, that’s billion with a B. According to data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, U.S.-based airlines collected over $7 billion in bag fees in 2024. This record-breaking amount does not include fees for first and second checked bags that Southwest is now charging for (note: Southwest did collect bag fees in 2024 on oversized and overweight bags).
The $7 billion collected in 2024 is expected to grow in 2025. American, United, and Delta each earned over $1 billion in bag fees last year. JetBlue also introduced Uber-style surge pricing for checked bags, making it more expensive to check luggage during peak travel times. For comparison, bag fee revenue in the pre-pandemic year 2019 was $5.76 billion.
Customers can opt to avoid some of these fees by earning loyalty status or purchasing tickets with an airline-branded credit card.

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby Addresses EWR Airport Issues
In a message to both customers and employees at Newark (EWR), United CEO Scott Kirby addressed several important issues:
- The FAA and all airlines operating at EWR continue to prioritize safety. Recent challenges include staffing shortages and tech outages. In May, the FAA reduced the number of flights in and out of Newark.
- United had the lowest cancellation rate at EWR in Q1 2025, outperforming JFK and LGA. UA’s on-time arrivals at EWR were also higher than those at LGA.
- Runway construction continues to impact operations but is expected to be completed by mid-June.
EWR is a critical hub for United, with nearly 50 million travelers passing through in 2024. Kirby is urging the FAA to take the following actions:
- Limit flights to 48 per hour during construction
- Cap total hourly flights at 77 after construction
- Modernize the ATC system
- Fully staff EWR
