As a seasoned explorer, I’ve ventured through Alaska’s untamed wilderness, uncovering its hidden gems and learning the ins and outs of the region. Whether you’re gearing up for a land and sea expedition or a thrilling outdoor adventure, I’ve got the tips and tricks to ensure you pack smart and travel wisely.
Layered Clothing for Variable Temperatures
Alaska’s weather is variable and unpredictable, and the temperatures vary greatly throughout the summer days from 40 – 70 (F) degrees. Packing layers is essential including a lightweight shirt, a moisture-wicking base layer, a fleece, a knit hat, and a water-resistant shell. Layers help you adjust your clothing to stay comfortable. Rain gear is not mandatory; however, it can help you stay dry and fully enjoy the breathtaking landscapes without being hindered by the weather.
Quality Footwear
Pack footwear to help you move safely through terrain. Non-slip soles with traction such as sturdy hiking shoes or rubber sole shoes will provide grip through the gravel and unpaved landscape and will also help keep your feet dry.
Binoculars and a Camera
Alaska’s pristine wilderness is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts! Bring a pair of binoculars to spot distant animals and birds during your land excursions. Whether you’re exploring national parks or cruising along the coast with glaciers and marine life, you’ll be ready to capture once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
Travel-Sized Essentials
While Alaska is a safe destination, it’s always wise to be prepared for minor injuries or unexpected situations. Pack a travel-sized first aid kit with bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, personal medications, and a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated throughout your journey. As you venture into remote areas, having these supplies on hand will give you peace of mind and ensure you can fully enjoy your adventures!
Cruise Attire
If you are starting or ending your Alaska journey on a cruise, don’t forget to bring your cruise attire! Recommended for Women: Capris, slacks, skirt and blouse, or a summer dress. Recommended for Men: clean denim jeans, slacks, polo shirts, collared shirts and an optional sportscoat if you desire.
